A note from Kelly A. Smith:
I'm so pleased to announce the release of my first book, Mommy Can Do It: A Do-It-Herself Guide to Baby-Proofing. My passion in life is helping keep kids safe through raising awareness of child safety issues. Because so many injuries and fatalities occur right in the home of children, it is only fitting that my first book focus on baby-proofing, which is a considerable means to decreasing injuries.
As the founder of a child safety company called Totsafe, I've been lucky enough to work with thousands of parents and caregivers over the years. Through this work I became aware of the need for a thorough, yet simple guide to baby-proofing. I believe Mommy Can Do It: A Do-It-Herself Guide to Baby-Proofing does just that.
Where I grew up in Northern Michigan, I watched my parents take care of everything around their own house. They were (and still are) the ultimate do-it-yourselfers. I brought that background in do-it-yourself work to the writing of Mommy Can Do It to help Mommies take baby-proofing into their own hands.
Mommy Can Do It is different than other baby-proofing books out there. Not only does Mommy Can Do It focus on teaching parents how to create a safe home environment for children, but it focuses on helping Moms specifically. Too many moms I talk to are unsure of themselves when it comes to tools, or even the terminology to decide what safety products they need. The childproofing checklist toward the back of the book is a perfect place to start and if Mom's not too sure about tools, there's a chapter devoted to learning about, practicing with, and using tools. Each chapter, whether it's Kitchen Safety, Bathroom Safety, the Baby Safety Gates chapter, or one of the other many chapters this book has to offer, has product illustrations and an easy step-by-step checklist to get Mom started. Plus, the book isn't hundreds of pages long, it's less than 100 - so it's an easy read from start to finish, with just the right amount of information to make homes safe for toddlers.
Excerpt from back cover:
As Mommies, we can do almost everything that our children need. We nurture them, feed them, bathe them, play with them and love them. We can do almost anything—until it comes to baby proofing. As soon as we see the words “drill a 1/16" pilot hole” most Mommies run screaming for Daddy. The idea of using a drill or screwdriver sometimes seems as foreign and daunting as overhauling an engine or building a house from the ground up. Would you like to find out the three steps to choosing a baby safety gate? Do you know how to protect your child from drowning in your own home? This book answers these questions and more.
Mommy Can Do It: A Do It Herself Guide to Baby-Proofing helps take away the frustration often associated with creating a child-safe home by empowering Mom to “do it herself.” No more does Mom need to wait for Dad to install the baby safety gate or to hire a baby-proofer. This is the only child safety book available that touches on important child safety risks in the home while focusing on helping Mom create a “Totsafe” home.
